Everything You Need to Know About Your PVC
Thursday, 26 February 2026
The Permanent Voter's Card (PVC) is your ticket to participating in Nigeria's democracy. Without it, you cannot vote. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is the PVC?
The PVC is a biometric smart card issued by INEC to every registered voter. It contains:
- Your full name
- Your photograph
- Your date of birth
- Your gender
- Your polling unit information
- A unique Voter Identification Number (VIN)
- An embedded chip with your biometric data (fingerprints)
Why Is It Important?
- It is mandatory for voting — No PVC, no vote. No exceptions.
- It is used for BVAS verification — The electronic machine reads your card and matches your biometrics.
- It is your permanent voting ID — Once issued, it remains valid for all future elections (unless you transfer).
- It links you to a specific polling unit — You can only vote at the polling unit encoded on your PVC.
How to Get Your PVC
If You Haven't Registered:
- Wait for INEC's next Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
- Visit your nearest INEC office with a valid ID (National ID, driver's license, passport, etc.).
- Complete the registration form.
- Provide your biometric data (photograph, fingerprints).
- You will be assigned a polling unit.
- Your PVC will be produced and made available for collection at the INEC office.
If You've Registered but Haven't Collected:
- Visit the INEC office in the LGA where you registered.
- Bring a valid form of identification.
- Verify your details and collect your PVC.
- You can also check INEC's website or call their hotline to confirm your PVC is ready.
Taking Care of Your PVC
- Keep it safe — Store it in a secure place. It is difficult to replace if lost.
- Do not laminate it — The chip needs to be readable by the BVAS machine. Laminating can damage the chip.
- Do not bend or crack it — The embedded chip can be damaged.
- Do not let anyone hold it for you — Political parties or agents who collect PVCs are committing a crime. Never surrender your card.
If Your PVC Is Lost or Damaged
- Visit your INEC LGA office.
- Report the loss/damage.
- You may need to swear an affidavit (for lost cards).
- INEC will guide you through the replacement process.
- Replacements may take time, so act well before any election.
