How to Transfer Your Voter Registration to a New Location

Thursday, 26 February 2026

If you have moved to a new city, state, or even a different area within the same state, your PVC is still tied to your old polling unit. You cannot vote at a new location unless you transfer your registration.

When Should You Transfer?

You should transfer your voter registration if:

  • You have permanently moved to a new address.
  • You now live far from your registered polling unit and cannot realistically travel to vote.
  • You want to vote for candidates in your new constituency (since who you vote for depends on where you are registered).

How to Transfer

Step 1: Wait for CVR

Voter transfers can only be done during INEC's Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

Step 2: Visit a New INEC Office

Go to the INEC office in the LGA where you now reside.

Step 3: Apply for Transfer

  • Bring your existing PVC.
  • Fill out a transfer application form.
  • Provide your new address details.
  • Your biometric data may be re-captured.

Step 4: Get a New PVC

Your registration will be moved to a new polling unit in your current area. A new PVC reflecting your updated polling unit will be issued.

Step 5: Confirm the Transfer

Before the next election, confirm that your transfer was processed by:

  • Checking INEC's voter verification portal.
  • Visiting your new INEC LGA office.
  • Using the voter verification feature on this app.

Important Notes

  • Your old PVC becomes invalid once the transfer is complete. Do not attempt to use it.
  • You cannot transfer during an election period — transfers are only possible during CVR exercises.
  • If you registered as a new voter (not a transfer), your old registration is automatically deactivated.
  • Transfer is free — INEC does not charge any fee.

Why Transfer Matters

Voting where you actually live means:

  • You vote for the local representatives who govern your area.
  • You contribute to the development of your community.
  • You don't have to travel long distances on election day.
