Understanding INEC: The Body That Runs Nigeria's Elections
Thursday, 26 February 2026
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is the body responsible for organizing and conducting elections in Nigeria. Understanding INEC helps you understand how your vote is managed.
What Does INEC Do?
INEC's responsibilities include:
- Voter registration — Registering eligible Nigerians and issuing PVCs.
- Delimitation of constituencies — Dividing Nigeria into electoral districts.
- Conducting elections — Organizing, managing, and supervising all federal elections and FCT elections.
- Registering political parties — Approving and monitoring political parties.
- Voter education — Teaching citizens about the electoral process.
INEC's Structure
National Level
- Chairman — Appointed by the President, confirmed by the Senate. Serves one 5-year term (not renewable).
- 12 National Electoral Commissioners — One from each of the 6 geo-political zones (2 each).
- Secretary — Chief administrative officer.
State Level
- Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) — INEC's representative in each state.
- State offices with administrative and logistics teams.
Local Level
- Electoral Officers at the LGA level.
- Supervisory Presiding Officers and Presiding Officers manage polling units on election day.
INEC's Independence
The Constitution establishes INEC as an independent body. This means:
- The President appoints the Chairman but cannot direct how INEC conducts elections.
- INEC's funding comes from the Consolidated Revenue Fund and is not controlled by any political party.
- INEC commissioners cannot be members of any political party.
However, INEC's independence has been debated over the years, and citizens play a crucial role in holding the commission accountable.
How to Interact with INEC
- INEC offices are in every state capital and most LGA headquarters.
- Visit www.inecnigeria.org for official information.
- During elections, INEC operates a Situation Room where you can report issues.
- Follow INEC's verified social media accounts for updates.
Your Role
INEC can only deliver credible elections if citizens:
- Register and collect their PVCs.
- Show up to vote on election day.
- Observe the process and report irregularities.
- Hold elected officials accountable between elections.
