Women's Voting Rights in Nigeria

Thursday, 26 February 2026

Women make up nearly half of Nigeria's registered voters, yet they face unique challenges in exercising their right to vote. Understanding your rights is the first step to overcoming these barriers.

Your Equal Right to Vote

The Nigerian Constitution guarantees equal voting rights regardless of gender. Section 42 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex. Every Nigerian woman aged 18 and above has the same right to register and vote as any man.

Challenges Women Voters Face

Cultural and Social Pressure

  • In some communities, women are discouraged from voting or told to vote the same way as their husbands or family heads.
  • Some women are told that politics is "not for women."

Safety Concerns

  • Fear of violence at polling units, especially in areas with a history of election-related violence.
  • Harassment on the way to or at polling units.

Practical Barriers

  • Domestic responsibilities (childcare, household duties) may make it difficult to spend hours in a queue.
  • In some areas, women may lack transportation to reach their polling units.

Your Rights Are Non-Negotiable

  1. No one can tell you how to vote — Your vote is secret. Not your husband, not your father, not your community leader. You vote for whoever YOU choose.
  2. You cannot be turned away — If you have a valid PVC and are at the correct polling unit, you must be allowed to vote.
  3. You deserve a safe environment — INEC and security agencies are required to ensure the safety of all voters. Report any harassment or intimidation.
  4. You can run for office — Beyond voting, women have the right to contest any elective position in Nigeria.

How to Overcome Barriers

  • Plan ahead — Arrange childcare and transportation before election day.
  • Go with others — Vote with friends, family members, or community groups for safety and support.
  • Know your polling unit — Use the MyPollingUnit app or website to find your polling unit, get GPS directions, and learn about your area in advance.
  • Report violations — Use the Incident Reporting feature if you face discrimination or intimidation.

Encouraging Others

If you know women in your community who face pressure not to vote:

  • Share this information with them.
  • Remind them their vote is secret and protected by law.
  • Offer to go with them to the polling unit.

Every woman's vote shapes Nigeria's future. Make yours count.
